Sopcial care rules 'inconsistent'

The rules governing which elderly or disabled people in England are entitled to social care have been criticised. A Commission for Social Care report says there are inconsistencies in how councils decide who gets help and how much they get.

Baby brains and the mystery of autism

Almita Knutsson is only five months old but her unusual headgear is already attracting attention from newspapers around the world. That spaghetti’d bonnet is a geodesic hairnet – a mesh of foam covered sensors attached to her scalp through which scientists at Uppsala University Babylab in Sweden measure her brainwaves. The hope is that the research could lead to a breakthrough in the diagnosis of autism.

Mainstream schools failing special needs pupils

Thousands of children with learning difficulties and behavioural problems are being expelled from mainstream schools because teachers lack the expertise to cater for them, according to a new report.

Parents of special needs pupils forced to go private

January 2008

Parents whose children have special needs such as dyslexia or Asperger’s Syndrome have been giving up holidays, meals out and new clothes to fund costly private education following an ‘exodus’ from state schools.
